Few verses have caused more theological hand-wringing, pulpit drama, and late night crisis spirals than James 2:17.
“So also faith, if it does not have works, is dead by itself.” James 2:17 (TLV)
People hear that verse and immediately one of two things happens. Either they start mentally auditing every good deed they have ever done to make sure their faith is still breathing, or they turn it into a measuring stick they hold over everybody else’s head while their own life stays conveniently unexamined.
Both of those responses have one thing in common. Neither one of them is what James was actually talking about.
So let’s back up. Way up. Because if you walk into James 2:17 without reading James 2:1 you have already missed the whole point and James did not write in verses anyway. That was somebody else’s idea.
