Context is Queen Tuesdays: “Pressed, But Not Crushed"
The Olive Press in Gethsemane
Ever read the story of Jesus praying in Gethsemane and wondered why the place itself gets so much airtime? It’s not just a scenic pitstop before the cross… there’s a reason Jesus’ most agonizing night happened there.
Let’s break it down:
“Gethsemane” means “oil press.”
Gat means “press” (as in a wine or oil press)
Shemanim is the plural of “shemen,” which means “oil”
The Garden of Gethsemane, located at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, was an olive grove, and it likely contained an olive press used to extract oil from olives.
This garden was literally a place where olives were crushed under heavy stones until oil flowed out. And oil, in Scripture, represents anointing, the Holy Spirit, and God’s power for what’s ahead.
When Jesus prays in Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-46), He’s being pressed—body, soul, and spirit. The weight of the world’s sin, the agony of surrender, the loneliness of knowing the cup He must drink. He says, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.”
Why does this context matter?
Because Jesus chose to be “crushed” in the place of pressing. Before there was resurrection glory, there was Gethsemane agony. The oil of redemption came through His surrender in the press. And it’s a pattern for us: sometimes our greatest anointing flows from seasons of pressure and surrender, not comfort and applause.
Context Challenge:
Next time you feel pressed, anxious, or overwhelmed, remember: Gethsemane wasn’t the end. The olive wasn’t wasted… the oil was the point. God’s power flows through surrendered places.
