“You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin, but I come to you in the Name of Adonai-Tzva’ot, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.”
— 1 Samuel 17:45 (TLV)
The Story You Think You Know
You were probably taught that David was a boy facing a giant with just a sling and “big faith.” Cue the flannelgraph and a moral about courage.
But Sunday School left out the details that make this story even more incredible, because this wasn’t a fairy tale underdog story. It was a masterclass in covenant, context, and calling.
Goliath Wasn’t Just Big… He Was Armed Like a God
Goliath’s armor wasn’t just military gear; it was symbolic. The Hebrew text uses the same word for “bronze” (nechoshet) that’s tied to serpents and idols. His scale armor shimmered like a snake’s skin; a living symbol of the serpent who opposed God’s people from the beginning.
So when David stepped onto that field, it wasn’t shepherd vs. soldier… it was Seed of the Woman vs. seed of the serpent (Genesis 3:15 playing out in real time).
David Didn’t Go Empty-Handed
Sunday School makes it sound like David was unarmed EXCEPT for a sling…. as though he had no choice but to use it. But that sling? It wasn’t a child’s toy; it was a serious weapon. Ancient slingers could hurl stones with the force of a modern handgun. Judges 20:16 says they could “hit a hair and not miss.” David knew exactly what he was doing.
And the five smooth stones? He wasn’t stocking up in case he missed. Goliath had four brothers (2 Samuel 21:15–22). David came prepared not just for Goliath but for the whole family.
Why David Chose a Sling, Not a Sword
Everyone else wore armor and fought on human terms. David refused Saul’s armor not because it didn’t fit… it wasn’t his calling. He didn’t win battles by copying others; he won by trusting covenant power. You cannot defeat the enemy in someone else’s armor!
When he said, “I come in the Name of the Lord,” that wasn’t poetic language. In Hebrew thought, the “Name” represented God’s authority, presence, and backing. David was declaring, “You have weapons; I have the One who made them.”
Covenant Confidence > Human Courage
David’s real weapon wasn’t the sling, it was his covenant awareness. He knew Goliath was “an uncircumcised Philistine,” meaning outside God’s covenant. To David, that meant Goliath was already defeated. His faith wasn’t blind optimism, it was legal authority under God’s promises.
That’s the difference between hope and faith: hope looks forward, faith acts now.
Why This Context Matters
Without context, David and Goliath sounds like a little pep talk about courage. But in context, it’s a revelation about covenant. David didn’t win because he was fearless… he won because he remembered who his God was.
Sunday School left out that Goliath wasn’t defying David’s bravery; he was defying God’s authority. David’s victory wasn’t about him at all; it was about restoring glory to the Name that Goliath mocked.
Context Challenge
The next time you face something bigger than you, ask: am I fighting this with fear or covenant confidence? You don’t need to be the strongest… you just need to remember Whose Name you carry.

Final Thought
This isn’t a story about self-confidence… it’s a story about covenant confidence. David wasn’t the hero because he was brave; he was the hero because he believed God’s promises more than Goliath’s threats.
When the world roars, “You can’t win,” remember David’s response: “I come in the Name of the Lord.”
