“Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd’s pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine.”
— 1 Samuel 17:40
We all know the headline: David, a shepherd kid with a sling, steps up, takes out Goliath, and boom… the underdog wins. But have you ever stopped to wonder why he grabbed five stones? If he trusted God, wouldn’t one have been enough?
Goliath Wasn’t Flying Solo
Here’s the part Sunday School skipped: Goliath wasn’t an only child. 2 Samuel 21 drops the receipts; the guy had four giant relatives, all Philistine warriors. One even had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot (which is nightmare fuel if you ask me).
So David? He wasn’t hedging his bets. He was prepared. He walked onto that battlefield knowing: “If Goliath’s cousins show up, I’ve got a stone for them too.” That’s not doubt. That’s faith with foresight.
Smooth Stones Weren’t a Vibe — They Were Strategy
The Hebrew word for “smooth” here points to stones shaped and polished by running water. In other words, aerodynamic ammo. Archaeology tells us sling stones could fly 90 mph. Roman historians compared slings to arrows in terms of deadliness.
Translation? David didn’t waltz out with random gravel. He knew his craft, he picked the best tools, and he paired that skill with absolute trust in God.
Faith doesn’t mean showing up unprepared. Faith means trusting God enough to step out, and wise enough to pick the right stones.
What the Rabbis Saw
Rabbinic midrash loves to find symbolism in numbers, and David’s five stones are no exception. Some tie them to the five books of Torah… as if David’s real strength came from walking in God’s Word. Others see the number five as representing God’s grace. Either way, the message is layered: David wasn’t just armed with rocks. He was armed with covenant.
Jesus and the Greater Battle
Fast forward: Jesus steps into His own showdown - not with a giant, but with Satan in the wilderness. His weapon? Not muscle, not might, but the Word. “It is written.” Every time.
And at the cross, what looked like weakness to the world… a beaten Jewish man nailed to wood… was actually God’s sling stone. One strike, and the giant of sin and death went down for good.
Why It Matters for Us
We all face giants: fear, doubt, temptation, grief, shame. And sometimes we’re out here hoping for victory while carrying an empty pouch.
David reminds us: fill your bag. Load up on Scripture. Arm yourself with prayer. Sharpen your faith. Be ready. That’s not overkill; that’s wisdom. Giants don’t always come one at a time.
Scripture Study:
1 Samuel 17:38–50 — David and Goliath
2 Samuel 21:15–22 — Goliath’s four giant relatives
Psalm 18:31–39 — God trains my hands for battle
1 Corinthians 1:27–29 — God using the weak to shame the strong
Reflection:
What giants are lining up in your life right now?
Where is God nudging you to prepare instead of just hoping it’ll all work out?
What “stones” has He already put in your hand that you might be overlooking?
My Final Thoughts
David’s story isn’t about reckless faith; it’s about wise faith. He knew his God was bigger than any giant, but he also knew giants run in packs.
Faith doesn’t mean closing your eyes and hoping for the best. It means walking onto the battlefield with your pouch full, your sling ready, and your confidence set on the God who never misses.
