7-Day Bible Study: “The God Who Sees: Encounters with El Roi” - Day 4
The Woman at the Well — Seen in the Shame (John 4:1–30)
Key Truth: Jesus sees our whole story… our brokenness and our potential… and still invites us in.
Scripture Reading: John 4:1–30
Teaching:
She came at noon, the hottest part of the day. Why? Because she didn’t want to face the whispers of the other women at the well. Shame had isolated her. Yet Jesus, a Jewish rabbi, sits down and talks with her… a Samaritan woman. Cultural taboos shattered in one conversation.
He tells her in verse 10 that He can give her “living water.” The Greek hydor zon means fresh, flowing water, symbolizing eternal life through the Spirit. He names her truth: five husbands and a current partner, and yet He doesn’t push her away. Instead, He invites her to true worship “in spirit and in truth” (v. 24).
And look at verse 28: she leaves her water jar. The very thing she came for no longer mattered. Shame gave way to testimony, and her whole town came to meet Jesus.
Reflection Questions:
What’s the “water jar” of shame or sin you keep carrying?
How does Jesus’ invitation to worship in spirit and truth free you?
Journal Prompt: Write about the thing you most try to hide. What would it look like to leave it behind and run to tell your story of redemption?
Prayer Prompt: Lord, thank You for seeing all of me and still offering me living water.
Memory Verse: John 4:14
