When you picture the story in Numbers 21… Israel complains, God sends “fiery serpents,” people get bitten, Moses makes a bronze serpent on a pole… your brain probably sees a bunch of slithering reptiles in the sand.
But in Hebrew, the phrase is נְחָשִׁים שְׂרָפִים (nechashim seraphim) and it literally means “serpents” and “seraphim.” And that’s where it gets interesting.
Seraphim — Not Just Angelic Choir Members
The seraphim Isaiah sees in chapter 6 are fiery, throne-room beings who cry “Holy, Holy, Holy.” The root word saraph means “to burn.” In the wilderness, the term could describe both the burning venom of the bite AND a spiritual being associated with fire.
Some scholars think the text is hinting at more than a plague of normal snakes… that this was a spiritual assault involving beings tied to God’s judgment.
The Bronze Serpent Was a Shock
Moses is told to make a bronze (nechoshet) serpent (nachash) and lift it up. This is scandalous in Torah terms; God has forbidden graven images. But here, the object is not for worship; it’s a visible symbol of judgment already borne. When the people looked at it, they were acknowledging both their sin and God’s mercy.
The Messiah Connection
In John 3:14–15, Yeshua says:
“Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up.”
The serpent… symbol of sin and curse… is nailed to a pole, and looking upon it brings life. At the cross, the One “who knew no sin became sin for us” (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Why This Matters for You
Sunday School gave us snakes and a quick miracle. Scripture gives us layers:
A physical plague with possible spiritual dimensions.
A shocking object lesson about judgment, sin, and grace.
A direct Messianic foreshadowing of the cross.
The lesson? Sometimes God heals us by making us look directly at facing the very thing that harmed us… not to glorify it, but to see how He has already defeated it.
Word Girl Challenge:
Read Numbers 21:4–9, Isaiah 6:1–7, and John 3:9–21. How does this deeper look at the “fiery serpents” expand your view of God’s plan in the wilderness?
