Let’s talk about healing. If you grew up in church, you probably heard about the woman who touched the edge of Jesus’ robe and was instantly healed. It’s a powerful story about faith, but Sunday School probably never told you why she reached for the fringe of His garment in the first place.
Did you know…
When the Gospels say the woman touched the “fringe” or “hem” of Jesus’ robe (Matthew 9:20, Luke 8:44), she wasn’t just grabbing at any old fabric. She was reaching for something every Jewish man—including Jesus—was commanded to wear: tassels (tzitzit) on the corners of their garments.
God’s command to wear these tassels is found in Numbers 15:38–39:
“Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘Throughout the generations to come you are to make tassels on the corners of your garments, with a blue cord on each tassel. You will have these tassels to look at and so you will remember all the commands of the Lord…’”
In Hebrew, the word for these fringes is tzitzit (צִיצִית). They were a visible, daily reminder of God’s Word and His faithfulness… a sign that you belonged to the covenant people. The blue thread (tekhelet) was costly and rare, symbolizing royalty, heaven, and God’s presence.
So, when the woman reached out in faith to touch the “fringe” of Jesus’ garment, she was reaching for the visible sign of God’s promises and authority. She believed that if Jesus truly was the Messiah, then even His tzitzit, those covenant fringes, carried healing and hope. And Jesus met her faith with a miracle.
Why Does This Matter?
Because the Bible is full of meaning hidden in plain sight. Knowing about tzitzit helps us see how Jesus fulfilled every command and how the faith of that woman was rooted in the promises of God’s Word.
You don’t need to wear tassels today, but you can reach for God’s promises with the same bold, believing faith.
Word Girl Challenge:
Read Numbers 15:37–41 and Matthew 9:18–22.
What do you notice about the woman’s faith and why she touched the fringe of Jesus’ garment?
How can you make God’s promises more “visible” in your daily life?
Go Deeper:
Malachi 4:2—The Messiah would bring “healing in His wings.” The Hebrew word for “wings” (kanaph) is also used for the corners of a garment, where the tassels were placed.
Mark 6:56—Others were healed by touching Jesus’ garment, too.
Final Thought:
The woman with the issue of blood didn’t just reach for healing, she reached for the visible promise of God’s faithfulness. Jesus met her there. What promises are you reaching for today?
