New Series Launch: Messianic Threads
I’m thrilled to introduce a brand-new Saturday series called Messianic Threads. Each week, we’ll trace the prophetic patterns that we see woven together throughout Scripture, uncovering how stories, rituals, and symbols in the Hebrew Bible point directly to Yeshua.
These aren’t just Bible stories… they’re golden threads that connect Genesis to the Gospels, revealing a Messiah who has been in the story from the very beginning.
Today’s post is open to everyone so you can get a taste of what’s coming. Beginning next week, this series will be available exclusively to Vault and Founding Members, where we’ll go deeper into the Word and explore the beauty of these Messianic connections together.
Isaac and the Foreshadowing of the Cross
Some stories in Scripture aren’t just history. They’re prophetic blueprints. One of the clearest is the story of Isaac being bound on Mount Moriah in Genesis 22; what Jewish tradition calls Akedat Yitzchak (the Binding of Isaac).
“Take your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will tell you.” — Genesis 22:2
On the surface, this is a test of Abraham’s faith. But when you look closer, the entire scene threads forward to the sacrifice of Yeshua.
For further learning, you can read more about the Akedah at my post here.
1. The Father and the Beloved Son
God tells Abraham to take “your son, your only son, whom you love.” The language mirrors John 3:16, where God gives His only begotten Son out of love.
Isaac is not a random figure here. He’s a prophetic shadow of the Messiah.
2. Moriah Matters
Mount Moriah isn’t just any mountain. Jewish tradition and biblical geography place this same region as the site where the Temple would later stand. This is also near the location of Yeshua’s crucifixion.
The same mountain range that saw Abraham lead his son to the altar would one day see the Father give His Son for the world.
3. Isaac Carried the Wood
“Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac.” — Genesis 22:6
Isaac carried the wood up the mountain on his back… the very thing he was meant to be sacrificed on. Yeshua carried His own crossbeam up to Golgotha.
The imagery is deliberate. This isn’t just poetic; it’s prophetic.
4. A Substitute Provided
At the last moment, God provides a ram caught in the thicket as a substitute for Isaac.
“So Abraham called the name of that place Adonai Yireh (The Lord Will Provide).” — Genesis 22:14
The name is future tense. Not “The Lord has provided” but “The Lord will provide.”
Centuries later, on that same mountain range, God would provide the ultimate Lamb — Yeshua — as the substitute for us all.
5. Voluntary Obedience
Isaac wasn’t a small child at this point. I know imagery usually has him a a child but he was not. Most scholars place him as a young man, fully capable of resisting. Yet he allows himself to be bound.
This echoes Yeshua’s willing surrender:
“No one takes my life from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.” — John 10:18
The Father gives. The Son submits. Salvation is set in motion.
Reflection Questions
How does seeing Isaac as a foreshadow of Jesus change the way you read this story?
Where do you see God’s provision written into the details of your own story?
How does Abraham’s trust mirror the Father’s love?
My Final Thought
Isaac and Jesus are separated by centuries, but their stories are woven together like golden threads through time.
Abraham carried his son up the mountain but received him back. God gave His Son and did not hold Him back. On Moriah, the Lord promised to provide. On Calvary, He did.
This is the beauty of Messianic threads… the Old Testament doesn’t just lead to the New, it whispers of Yeshua all along the way.
