“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt should lose its flavor, how shall it be made salty again?”
— Matthew 5:13 (TLV)
Salt: More Than Seasoning
Have you ever wondered why salt keeps showing up in Scripture… from offerings to covenants to Yeshua’s Sermon on the Mount? Was it just about taste, or is there something deeper in those tiny white crystals?
In the Bible, salt wasn’t just for cooking. It was a preservative, a purifier, and even a symbol of loyalty and permanence. In Leviticus 2:13, God commands Israel to season every grain offering with salt:
“You are to season with salt every sacrifice of your grain offering. You are never to allow the salt of the covenant of your God to be missing…”
Salt was tied directly to covenant faithfulness.
The Covenant of Salt
In the ancient Near East, eating salt together was a sign of unbreakable friendship and loyalty. Once you shared salt, betrayal was unthinkable. That’s why Scripture calls the priesthood given to Aaron a “covenant of salt” (Numbers 18:19)—a lasting, incorruptible agreement.
Salt wasn’t just sprinkled on the offering; it symbolized the eternal bond between God and His people.
Salt in the Teachings of Yeshua
When Yeshua tells His disciples, “You are the salt of the earth,” His listeners weren’t thinking of French fries. They were hearing echoes of covenant, purity, and preservation. Followers of Messiah were meant to “preserve” truth in a decaying world, to live faithfully as covenant people, and to flavor the earth with the knowledge of God.
Paul picks up this imagery when he writes:
“Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt” (Colossians 4:6).
It’s not about talking elouquently; it’s about speech that preserves truth and brings life.
Did You Know?
Archaeologists have found that salt was so valuable in the ancient world it was sometimes used as currency. Roman soldiers even received a “salarium”…a salt allowance…which is where we get the word “salary.”
In Jewish tradition, to this day, bread at Shabbat is dipped in salt before eating, remembering the eternal covenant.
Why It Still Matters
Salt reminds us that our faith isn’t meant to be bland or hidden; it’s meant to preserve, purify, and point back to God’s covenant love. To “lose our saltiness” is to forget who we are and the covenant we’ve been brought into.
For followers of Yeshua, being “salt of the earth” means living in such a way that the world is seasoned with truth, preserved from decay, and reminded of God’s faithfulness.
Reflection Questions
Where in your life is God calling you to “preserve” His truth against compromise?
How can your words this week be seasoned with grace and truth?
What does it look like for you to live as a visible reminder of God’s covenant love?
My Final Thoughts
Salt may seem small and ordinary to us today. We all have it in our kitchens and we use it without much thought. But in God’s Word it carries weight far beyond the kitchen table. It’s a picture of covenant faithfulness, purity, and a life that flavors the world with God’s truth.
As you move through this week, don’t underestimate the power of being salty… in the best biblical sense. The way you live, speak, and hold fast to God’s promises can be a preserving force in a world that’s always spoiling for lack of it.
You’re not just learning about salt. You’re learning to live as a covenant-keeper in a world desperate for truth.

I personally think it was to preserve her as a warning to others.
Great teaching! Why do you think God turned Lots wife into salt?
