Why did Jesus call the Syrophoenician woman a dog? A closer look at kynarion, Mark 7:24–30, and what her comeback actually proves about faith and mercy.
It (almost) reminds me of the Proverb about the first speaker sounding reasonable, until the second speaks and changes the outcome. Of course, Jesus was not "wrong" (he did not need correction), but her response moved the encounter to a different conclusion. It also reminds me of Jesus's response when he met the people in the village of the woman at the well - John says that, at the urging of the Samaritans, he stayed with them for 2 days. What a blessing! So many of his encounters occurred while he was on the move, but in this instance, he stopped and stayed and John noted it. In the vignette of this in "The Chosen", the woman tells Jesus "I am going to tell everyone!" before running into the village. That 8-minute excerpt is the best I have seen from the show. As for the Syro-Phoenician woman, I have wondered about her life - what happened afterwards. Did she go to a synagogue? Did she ever meet other Christians after the resurrection? Did the Holy Spirit come upon her, at Pentecost? And on others Jesus met on his journeys, like Zacchaeus, Mr. Legion, the Roman centurion whose servant was healed, etc.? I would think so.
