Torah Portion Va’etchanan - "And I Pleaded"

Deuteronomy 3:23–7:11 | Isaiah 40:1–26 | Matthew 27:62–28:10

Moses got a no.

The man who talked God out of destroying Israel, who spent forty days on a mountain without so much as a snack, who spoke with God face to face like a friend, stood at the edge of the Jordan and begged to cross. And God said no. The TLV records it even stronger than that: “Enough! Do not speak to Me anymore about this matter.”

If you’ve ever prayed for something good, something that seemed like it should absolutely be a yes, and heaven answered no, this portion was written with you in mind. And here’s the part I can’t get over. The portion isn’t named The Denial. It’s named Va’etchanan, “and I pleaded.” The Torah remembers this moment by the prayer. The asking gets the headline.

This week is also Shabbat Nachamu, the Sabbath of Comfort, the first Shabbat after Tisha B’Av. Jewish communities just spent a day grieving the destruction of both Temples, sitting on the floor, reading Lamentations by candlelight. And the very next Shabbat, God opens His mouth in the haftarah and the first word out is “Comfort.” So grab your coffee. This one is tender, and I’m not apologizing for it.

Word Study: Va’etchanan (וָאֶתְחַנַּן)

Va’etchanan (vah-et-chah-NAHN) means “and I pleaded” or “and I implored.” The root is chanan (חָנַן), the Hebrew verb for showing grace or favor. It’s the same root behind chen (חֵן), the word for grace, the favor Noah found in God’s eyes in Genesis 6:8. You’ve prayed this root out loud if you’ve ever heard the Aaronic blessing, because vichuneka, “and be gracious to you” in Numbers 6:25, grows from the same root.

But here’s what gets me every time. The verb form Moses uses is reflexive. He’s seeking grace for himself. This is the man with the most impressive spiritual resume in the entire Torah, and when he asks for the one thing his heart wants most, he reaches for the vocabulary of grace. He appeals to who God is. His plea opens with God’s greatness and God’s strong hand, and only then gets to the request.

Jewish tradition noticed this grammar long before we did. Rashi, drawing on earlier rabbinic teaching, taught that the righteous ask God for a free gift even when they have merit they could stand on.

Now, that’s tradition rather than the text itself, but it’s tradition paying close attention to something real in the Hebrew. The Torah’s greatest prophet prays like a man with empty hands.

The Torah: Deuteronomy 3:23–7:11

The portion opens mid-heartbreak. Moses is retelling Israel’s story to the generation about to inherit the promise, and he doesn’t edit himself out of the painful parts.

“I pleaded with Adonai at that time, saying, ‘O Lord Adonai, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your strong hand—for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do deeds and mighty acts like Yours? Please! Let me cross over and see the good land across the Jordan—that good hill country and the Lebanon.’” (Deuteronomy 3:23–25 TLV)

God’s answer lands HARD. “Enough!” But look at what comes with the no. God sends Moses up Pisgah to take in the whole land with his own eyes, west and north and south and east, and then hands him a task: commission Joshua, encourage him, strengthen him. The no comes with sight and succession. Moses doesn’t get to enter, and he still gets to matter for everyone who does.

A later Jewish tradition, recorded in Devarim Rabbah, counts Moses’ prayers here at five hundred and fifteen, the numerical value of the word va’etchanan. Make of the counting what you will. The rabbis were making a point about persistence, and about a God who can love a man dearly and still tell him no. That is something for us to remember when He tells us no as well.

From there the portion turns to the new generation. Chapter 4 pleads with Israel to hold fast to what they’ve seen and heard, to add nothing and subtract nothing, to make no image of the God who spoke from the fire.

Chapter 5 repeats the Ten Words (Ten Commandments), this time to the children of the people who first heard them at Sinai. A second telling for a second generation. And then chapter 6 gives us the words Jewish people have prayed morning and evening for thousands of years, the words Yeshua Himself called the greatest commandment:

“Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love Adonai your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” (Deuteronomy 6:4–5 TLV)

Here's what I love about the Shema. It doesn't stay in the realm of ideas for even one verse. These words are to live on your heart. You teach them to your children. You speak them when you sit in your house, when you walk, when you lie down, when you rise. You bind them on your hand, set them between your eyes, write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Loving God with everything turns out to look astonishingly domestic. It happens at your table and your front door.

The portion closes in chapter 7 with the “why” underneath it all. God didn’t choose Israel because they were impressive. He chose them because He loved them and because He keeps His Word. Which means one of the foundations under the whole covenant is the same thing Moses appealed to on his knees: grace.

The Haftarah: Isaiah 40:1–26

This haftarah gives Shabbat Nachamu its name. After Tisha B’Av’s grief, the synagogue reading turns to Isaiah 40, and for seven straight weeks the haftarot speak consolation over Israel until Rosh Hashanah arrives. Comfort has a season on the Jewish calendar, and it starts now.

“‘Comfort, comfort My people,’ says your God. Speak kindly to the heart of Jerusalem and proclaim to her that her warfare has ended, that her iniquity has been removed.”
(Isaiah 40:1–2 TLV)

Nachamu, nachamu. I love that word. Here the word comes doubled, the way you repeat something to a person who’s crying too hard to hear you the first time. And God specifies the delivery: speak kindly to the heart.

Comfort in Isaiah isn’t a vibe or a mood. It’s announced. Warfare ended. Iniquity removed. Real things have changed, and Jerusalem needs to hear them out loud.

Then the chapter swells. A voice cries out to prepare the way of the LORD. Every valley lifted, every mountain made low, and the glory of the LORD revealed for all flesh to see together. A second voice answers the obvious objection, because if people are as fleeting as grass, what good is any announcement?

“The grass withers, the flower fades. But the word of our God stands forever.”
(Isaiah 40:8 TLV)

Hold onto that verse for a sec. It’s about to matter in a garden tomb.

The reading ends with God taking Israel to the window. Lift up your eyes on high and see. Who created these? He brings out the stars by number and calls them all by name, and because of His great strength, not one is missing.

Moses stood on Pisgah and looked at a land he couldn’t enter. Isaiah’s exiles look up at a night sky and learn that the God who hasn’t lost a single star hasn’t lost track of a single one of them. Sometimes the comfort God gives first is simply somewhere to look.

The Besorah: Matthew 27:62–28:10

The Besorah reading opens with a group of very nervous men. The ruling kohanim (priests) and elders come to Pilate the day after the crucifixion because they remember something: “that deceiver said while He was still alive, ‘After three days I’m to be raised.’”

They remembered His words more precisely than His own disciples did that weekend, and it kept them up at night. So they seal the stone and post a guard, which means Rome and the Temple leadership spent Shabbat protecting the world from a promise.

Then the first day of the week begins to dawn, and two grieving women named Miriam (Mary in English) walk to the tomb. Earthquake. An angel like lightning rolls back the stone and sits on it, which remains the most casual display of victory in the entire Bible and I am not even mad. The guards faint. And the angel speaks to the women:

“Do not be afraid, for I know you are looking for Yeshua who was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.” (Matthew 28:5–6 TLV)

Just as He said. Isaiah preached that grass withers and flowers fade but the word of our God stands forever, and on that morning two women found out exactly how far forever goes. The word held through betrayal, through crucifixion, through a sealed stone and an armed guard. Death had every advantage and the word still stood.

They run from the tomb with fear but with immense joy, and Yeshua Himself meets them. His first word to them is “Shalom!” The risen Messiah’s opening word in Matthew is peace, spoken to weeping women in a graveyard at dawn. If Isaiah 40 tells us God commands comfort to be spoken kindly to the heart of His grieving people, the Besorah shows us God doing it in person.

And Moses? He asked to cross over and see the good land, and he was told not to raise the matter again. Centuries later, on another mountain, Moses appears in glory standing with Yeshua, talking with Him (Matthew 17:3).

The text doesn’t name the mountain and I won’t pretend it does. But the man who was told to stop asking ended up in conversation with the Word made flesh. God’s no to Moses had a longer arc than anything visible from Pisgah. I find that the no’s in my own life rarely come with the arc attached. Va’etchanan suggests the arc is there anyway.

Thematic Threads

The prayer gets the headline

The portion takes its name from the plea itself. Scripture treats a prayer that received a no as worthy of naming an entire portion after. Moses’ denied request stands in the Torah forever, honored, retold in his own voice to the next generation. Whatever else that teaches us about prayer, it teaches us that asking is never wasted breath.

Just as He said

Deuteronomy 6 puts God’s words on hearts, hands, doorposts, and gates. Isaiah 40 stakes everything on the claim that God’s word outlasts every fading thing. Matthew 28 delivers the verdict through an angel sitting on a rolled-away stone: just as He said. All three readings are one argument about whether God’s word holds. It holds.

Comfort after grief

Tisha B’Av gives way to Nachamu. The sealed tomb of Shabbat gives way to resurrection dawn. Warfare ended, iniquity removed, Shalom spoken in a graveyard. In both testaments, God lets grief be real and then answers it with announcement, presence, and peace. Comfort is how His story bends.

My Final Thoughts

I’ve prayed some Va’etchanan prayers in my life. Prayers where I opened with worship and closed with please, prayers for things so reasonable I’d already made room for them, and the answer was still no. In fact, I just had that moment. I used to read Deuteronomy 3 and feel sorry for Moses. Now I read it and feel understood by him.

Because here’s what this portion did for me this year. God’s no to Moses arrived with a mountaintop view, a successor to pour into, and a future Moses couldn’t see from where he stood.

Then the calendar itself preached the rest of the sermon. Nachamu falls every single year, the same Shabbat, right after the grief. Can I just tell you how much I love this? Comfort isn't something God accidentally gets around to. It's built right into His calendar. It’s His pattern, sewn into Israel’s year, sealed at an empty tomb, and spoken with a shalom to women who came expecting to mourn.

So if you’re standing at your own Jordan this week, holding a no you didn’t want, pray anyway. Plead anyway. Name your portion after the asking. The God who told Moses “Enough” is the same God whose first word after Israel’s darkest day is “Comfort,” and He hasn’t changed His vocabulary.

Hebrew Letter Lesson: Bet

The Shape. Bet is the second letter of the aleph-bet. In Proto-Canaanite, the ancestor of the Hebrew alphabet, the earliest form of bet resembled the outline of a house. Even drawn in modern square script, bet keeps that shape: closed on three sides, open on one.

The Name. The letter’s name comes from bayit (בַּיִת), the Hebrew word for house. Its numerical value is two. And as a single-letter prefix, bet means “in” or “with,” which is why the entire Torah opens with it: Bereshit, “in the beginning.” Before Scripture says anything else, it says in. God’s story starts inside.

In This Portion. Va’etchanan hands the letter of the house its job description. The Shema commands that God’s words be spoken when you sit in your house, b’veitecha, and written on the doorposts of your house, mezuzot beitecha (Deuteronomy 6:7, 9). The letter that means house watches the words of God move into one. And bet’s value of two weaves through the portion as well, because Deuteronomy 5 gives the Ten Words their second telling, spoken afresh to a new generation on the edge of the promise.

A Little Nugget

A traditional Jewish teaching asks why the Torah begins with bet rather than aleph, and answers from the letter’s shape: bet is closed behind and above but open toward the text ahead, so Torah begins facing forward. That’s tradition rather than Scripture, but it pairs beautifully with this portion, because in Deuteronomy 6 God’s forward-facing word is heading somewhere wonderfully specific. Your front door.

Application

Read Deuteronomy 6:4–9 out loud at home this week, inside the very kind of space those verses describe.

Pick one doorway in your home and let it prompt you: each time you cross it, one line of the Shema.

Take an honest look at what actually fills your house, the conversations, the sounds, the screens, and ask where God’s words could take up more room.

Weekly Practice: The Doorpost Pause

This week, borrow a rhythm from Deuteronomy 6. Each morning as you leave and each evening as you come home, pause at your front door and say aloud: “Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.” That’s it. No production, no journal required.

Jewish households have marked their doorposts with these words for millennia through the mezuzah, which contains the Shema and its companion passage and while I’m not asking you to install one, I am asking you to let your threshold preach. Seven days of crossing into and out of your house under the confession that God is one, and I promise the door will start preaching back.

Read Deuteronomy 3:23–29. What does Moses appeal to in his plea, and what three things does God give him alongside the no?

Compare Deuteronomy 5:1–6 with Deuteronomy 6:4–9. How does the retelling of the Ten Words prepare the ground for the Shema’s command to love?

In Isaiah 40:1–11, identify each voice and what it announces. What has changed for Jerusalem, and who’s responsible for saying so?

Read Isaiah 40:8 next to Matthew 28:5–6. How does the angel’s “just as He said” put Isaiah’s claim about God’s word on display?

In Matthew 27:62–66, what exactly do the ruling kohanim remember Yeshua saying, and what does their reaction reveal about the power they thought His words had?

Reflection Questions

Where have you prayed a Va’etchanan prayer, a good request that received a no? What arrived alongside the no, and can you see any of the arc yet?

Moses opened his plea with God’s greatness before making his request. What do your prayers usually open with, and what would change if they opened there?

Isaiah says comfort must be spoken kindly to the heart. Who spoke that kind of comfort to you in a season of grief, and what made it land?

The women left the tomb with fear yet with great joy. When have those two lived in you at the same time, and what did you do with them?

Action Challenges

Practice the Doorpost Pause all seven days this week, morning and evening, and note what shifts by Shabbat.

Write out Deuteronomy 6:4–5 by hand and place it somewhere your household will actually see it this week.

Be someone’s Nachamu. Send one message this week that speaks kindly to the heart of a woman walking through grief or disappointment, comfort announced out loud, Isaiah 40 style.
