What Your Sunday School Never Told You
Covenants Were Cut in Blood—Not Just Promises
Let’s talk about covenant. In church we throw the word around like it’s just a spiritual pinky-swear. But in the ancient world, and in your Bible, a covenant was deadly serious. It wasn’t just a contract; it was a binding agreement sealed in blood.
Did you know…
The Hebrew word for covenant (berit) literally means “to cut.” In Genesis 15, God made a covenant with Abraham by having animals split in half, and God Himself passed between the pieces (Genesis 15:9-18).
The phrase “cut a covenant” isn’t metaphorical. It meant, “If I break this promise, may what happened to these animals happen to me.”
Every major covenant in Scripture (Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, and the New Covenant in Jesus) is sealed with sacrifice—blood that speaks of life, seriousness, and belonging.
Jesus uses this same language at the Last Supper: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you” (Luke 22:20). He wasn’t just starting a tradition. He was fulfilling every bloody promise, becoming the ultimate sacrifice.
Why Does This Matter?
Because when God makes a promise, He stakes His own life on it. Your salvation isn’t based on your ability to keep your end of the deal; it’s secured by the blood of Jesus. The cross isn’t just forgiveness, it’s covenant. That means you’re not a casual guest in God’s family. You’re a blood-bought, covenant-bound, fully adopted child.
Word Girl Challenge:
Read Genesis 15 and Luke 22:14–20.
What does it mean to you that God “walked through the pieces” for Abraham, and that Jesus offered His own blood for you?
Where in your life have you settled for contract faith, when God is offering covenant relationship?

God never asks you to trust in cheap promises. He invites you into a covenant… sealed in blood, fulfilled in Christ, and kept forever.

Your words show how serious and sacred covenant really is. “To cut” says so much and the part that stays with me: God walked through the pieces. That’s grace that carries the full cost.
