Rachaph — the Hebrew word for "hovering" in Genesis 1:2 — appears only a handful of times in Scripture. Follow the arc from creation to Tabernacle to Yeshua.
This reminds me of when Jesus calms the storm in Matthew 8:23–27, there was an opposing spirit (Ruach) creating chaos on Sea of Galilee, but the incarnate presence of God brings it all to order and form with his words.
Storms often come despite our obedience, but we need not be concerned when God is with us.
I like your “verbifying” rachaph – “And the Ruach is rachaph-ing over all of it.”
The whole narrative arc of the Scripture is missed so easily for us Western, linear-thinkers. We tend to see things in pieces more than the whole. The Eastern (& Mideast) mind is more wholistic than linear. Thanks for bringing out the over-arching narrative element.
Even John 1:1-3 speaks of the “hovering” before the indwelling, incarnation of vs 14.
Thank you for this. Your writing is not in vain. It is rather like a workout for the mind and heart. And is always reinforcing the unchangeableness of our Great and Holy God.
I grew up with a very difficult father. When we would have to work on his property, even as an adult, my spirit would feel heavy and crushed before I even arrived. And one day Holy Spirt put Genesis 1:2 on my heart. He gave me a vision of Him hovering over the fields where the ugliness couldn’t get to me because He was holding it down. I always wondered if this was Him or just my imagination. But now I know….like a mama bird over something vulnerable!
Oh Rebecca, I am so so sorry. I am praying for you and your family. I cannot imagine the grief you feel but yes, you're correct. God is hovering and is right there with you in your pain. My deepest condolences.
I got this far and burst into tears already >the mother bird being “Present over something vulnerable with her full attention, her whole weight, her complete intention.”

Present over something vulnerable with her full attention, her whole weight, her complete intention.”
