Scripture Focus: “The righteous (tzadik) will live by his trust.” — Habakkuk 2:4, TLV
The Word
Tzadik (צַדִּיק) comes from the Hebrew root צ-ד-ק (tz-d-k), meaning “to be just” or “to be in the right.” It’s tied to tzedek (justice) and tzedakah (charity or righteous giving).
In the Hebrew Bible, a tzadik is not just a “good person” in the Hallmark movie sense. It’s someone whose life aligns with God’s covenant standards; legally, morally, relationally. They live in such a way that if God Himself examined the record, it would match His law and His heart.
The Layers of a Tzadik
Legal Standing
In Torah terms, being a tzadik means you are declared right in a legal sense. Think of Job… called “blameless and upright” (Job 1:1)… because his life met God’s covenant standards. It doesn’t mean perfection, but covenant faithfulness.Moral Integrity
A tzadik’s actions align with God’s ways. Proverbs 10 is basically a field guide to the tzadik: honest speech, generosity, humility, and trust in the Lord.Relational Faithfulness
A tzadik treats others with fairness and compassion, because righteousness in the Bible is never just about “me and God.” It’s also about “me and you.”
From Tanakh to New Covenant
When Paul quotes Habakkuk 2:4 in Romans 1:17—“The righteous will live by faith”—he’s pulling this whole tzadik worldview into the Gospel. Through Yeshua, righteousness isn’t just imputed (declared over us) but also lived out as we’re transformed by His Spirit.
In other words: in Messiah, you’re made a tzadik AND you’re called to live as one.
Why It Matters
Calling someone a tzadik isn’t casual in Jewish thought, it’s a high honor. And when Scripture calls you righteous because of Yeshua, it’s saying:
Your record before God is clean
Your life is being shaped to match His character
You’re invited to live as an example of covenant faithfulness in a watching world
Word Girl Challenge:
Read Proverbs 10 and make two columns: traits of the tzadik vs. traits of the wicked. Then ask the Lord, “Where do You want to grow me into righteousness this week?”

Word Nerd Wednesday: Tzadik(Righteousness) This is a beautiful devotional! The challenge to apply righteousness to my every day, living righteously as God intended. As I read the Dig Deeper, particularly Isaiah 33:15-17 I found myself looking above and below those verses for a better understanding and I began seeing what life will be like when we are with Adonai in the new Jerusalem and found myself in tears thinking of that day, that time. Seeing and being with my LORD and experience the quietness/peace that is there, the forgiveness, where Adonai is for us/me! He will save us/me! "Look upon Zion, city of our Festivals. Your eyes will see Jerusalem as a quiet home, a tent that will never be folded, Its stakes never pulled up, its cords never broken" verse 20.
