Torah Portion Eikev - "As a Result"

Torah: Deuteronomy 7:12–11:25 | Haftarah: Isaiah 49:14–51:3 | Besorah: Luke 24:13–32

Somewhere in America there’s a kitchen towel with “Man does not live by bread alone” embroidered on it, hanging beside an actual bread box. I say this with love, as a woman who has quoted that verse while reaching for a second roll at Texas Roadhouse. This week we get to read it at home, in its own neighborhood, and I promise you it has never once been about carbs.

The line lives in a speech Moses gives on the far side of the Jordan, to the children of former slaves, explaining why God let their parents get hungry in the wilderness. Hungry on purpose.

That sounds harsh until you hear the whole sentence, and then it becomes one of the most tender explanations of a hard season anywhere in Scripture. The hunger had a curriculum. So did the manna. Forty years of daily bread was forty years of learning where life actually comes from.

The portion is called Eikev, and the name itself is up to something. It is a small word, easy to walk right past, which turns out to be exactly the point.

Word Study: Eikev

Eikev (pronounced AY-kev, עֵקֶב) opens the portion, and the TLV translates it beautifully: “as a result of your listening.” Most English Bibles settle for “because.” Accurate, but it hides the picture.

The standard Hebrew lexicons place eikev in the same word family as akev, the heel. In this verse eikev functions as a conjunction, “because” or “as a result,” so the word doesn’t literally mean “heel” here; its etymological kinship with the heel is what makes the wordplay so amazing.

It is the word family behind Jacob’s name; Ya’akov came out of the womb with his hand gripping his brother’s heel (Genesis 25:26). So when Moses says blessing comes eikev your listening, the image underneath is a footprint. Consequence follows conduct the way a heel follows a step. Blessing arrives on the heel of obedience.

Jewish tradition noticed something else. Rashi, the medieval commentator, read eikev here as a hint about the commandments people tread on with their heel, the ones we consider minor and step over on the way to the impressive ones.

That reading is tradition rather than canon, but I have never been able to unsee it. The small obediences. The unglamorous faithfulness. According to this teaching, those are the very ones the blessing follows.

Keep both pictures tucked away in your pocket this week. Blessing on the heel of listening, and listening that reaches all the way down to the heel-level things.

Torah: The Wilderness Had a Syllabus

Moses opens with the promise itself:

“Then it will happen, as a result of your listening to these ordinances, when you keep and do them, that Adonai your God will keep with you the covenant kindness that He swore to your fathers.” Deuteronomy 7:12 (TLV)

Notice who does the keeping. Israel keeps the ordinances, and God keeps the covenant kindness. Two keepers, one covenant. Moses then spends four chapters making sure nobody gets what kind of arrangement this is twisted, because the human heart has two reliable ways of getting it wrong, and he covers them both.

The first wrong turn is forgetting where provision comes from. So Moses takes them back to the manna:

“He afflicted you and let you hunger, then He fed you manna—which neither you nor your fathers had known—in order to make you understand that man does not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of Adonai.” Deuteronomy 8:3 (TLV)

Read that in context and the famous line changes shape. The manna was bread. God fed them actual food. The lesson was never that bread is unnecessary; the lesson was that the bread itself came by His word, morning after morning, in an economy where you could not stockpile, could not hoard, could not take a single day’s food for granted.

Every sunrise was a fresh sentence from the mouth of God. The wilderness stripped away every other explanation for their survival until only one remained.

Two verses later, Moses names the theology behind the whole forty years:

“Now you know in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so Adonai your God disciplines you.” Deuteronomy 8:5 (TLV)

A father with a son. That’s the frame Moses hands them for every hungry morning and every strange breakfast of manna. The wilderness years were formation, the kind a loving parent gives a child on purpose, with the child’s good in view the entire time.

Centuries later, when Hebrews 12 tells believers to endure hardship as the discipline of a Father who loves them, it is drawing on the theology Moses taught here first. The letter to a struggling first-century community and the speech on the plains of Moab are reading from the same family playbook.

And then Moses does something a lesser leader would totally skip. He warns them about prosperity. The danger, he says, is coming after the wilderness, when the wadis flow and the bread has no poverty in it and the houses are good:

“You may say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand has made me this wealth.’ Rather you are to remember Adonai your God, for it is He who gives you power to make wealth, in order to establish His covenant that He swore to your fathers—as it is this day.” Deuteronomy 8:17–18 (TLV)

Hunger tempted their parents to doubt God. Fullness will tempt the children to forget Him. Of the two, Moses treats the fullness as the deadlier condition.

The second wrong turn is spiritual pride, and chapter 9 dismantles it with a repetition that borders on rude. Not because of your righteousness. Not because of your righteousness. It is not because of your righteousness (Deuteronomy 9:4–6).

Three times in three verses, followed immediately by the golden calf story retold in full, just in case anyone needed receipts. You are receiving this land, Moses says, because of the wickedness of the nations and because God keeps the word He swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Grace has a memory longer than your résumé.

Then, having leveled the ground, chapter 10 asks the question the whole portion has been building toward:

“So now, O Israel, what does Adonai your God require of you, but to fear Adonai your God, to walk in all His ways and love Him, and to serve Adonai your God with all your heart and with all your soul, to keep the mitzvot of Adonai and His statutes that I am commanding you today, for your own good?” Deuteronomy 10:12–13 (TLV)

For your own good. The commands were never a toll booth on the way to blessing; they were the blessing’s address. And the obedience God wants goes deeper than skin: “Circumcise the foreskin of your heart therefore, and do not be stiff-necked anymore” (Deuteronomy 10:16). Moses introduces the theme here, Jeremiah develops it, and Paul draws on the same covenant language in Romans. The covenant always aimed at the heart.

Chapter 11 closes the reading with geography as theology. Egypt, Moses says, was watered “by foot” (Deuteronomy 11:10), his shorthand for a farming system that ran on human effort: canals and channels fed by the Nile and worked by hand and foot, predictable as plumbing. Canaan depended primarily on seasonal rains. The Land they are entering runs on a different system:

“But the land you are crossing over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, drinking from the rain of the heavens it drinks in water. It is a land that Adonai your God cares for—the eyes of Adonai your God are always on it, from the beginning of the year up to the end of the year.” Deuteronomy 11:11–12 (TLV)

A land that drinks from heaven is a land that keeps you looking up. God did not give His people a country where they could forget Him efficiently. He gave them one where the rain itself was a conversation.

Haftarah: A Mother Would Forget First

This is the second of seven haftarot of consolation, the readings that walk Israel from the grief of Tisha B’Av toward the new year. Last week God said “Comfort, comfort My people.” This week, Zion claps back.

But Zion said: “Adonai has forsaken me, Adonai has forgotten me.” Isaiah 49:14 (TLV)

I love that the text lets her say it. No angel interrupts. No one steps in to soften the accusation. Scripture leaves the words exactly where they are: the weary complaint of a people in exile who had looked at their circumstances and concluded that God had forgotten them. God does not rebuke them for saying it. He answers with the most intimate picture of provision a human being can experience:

“Can a woman forget her nursing baby or lack compassion for a child of her womb? Even if these forget, I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of My hands. Your walls are continually before Me.” Isaiah 49:15–16 (TLV)

A nursing mother does not consult a calendar to remember her baby; her own body reminds her. I have nursed so trust me. You’d get a very good physical reminder if you ever forgot to feed that baby! God reaches for the strongest bond in human experience and then says His faithfulness exceeds it. Even if these forget.

And then the engraving. Not written in ink, which fades, and not on a scroll, which can be put up on a shelf. Carved into the palms, where every open hand displays it. It is Isaiah’s image, poetry rather than anatomy, and it works precisely because the poetry tells the truth.

The haftarah ends by circling back to the very landscape Moses kept talking about:

For Adonai will comfort Zion. He will comfort all her waste places. He will make her wilderness like Eden, her desert like the garden of Adonai. Joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and a sound of melody. Isaiah 51:3 (TLV)

The wilderness that once served as a classroom is scheduled to become a garden. God doesn’t just rescue His people from desolate places. He has plans for the places themselves.

Besorah: Burning Hearts on the Road

A quick word before we walk this road together: pairing a Besorah reading with the weekly Torah portion is a Messianic practice, a way of reading the Gospels alongside the yearly cycle. You will not find it in a traditional synagogue, and the pairing is offered as an interpretive companion rather than a claim about the text’s original setting.

It is resurrection day, and two disciples are walking seven miles in the wrong direction. Jerusalem is behind them, and so, they believe, is everything they hoped for. A stranger falls in step. Luke tells us it is Yeshua Himself, and that “their eyes were kept from recognizing Him” (Luke 24:16). Then comes one of the saddest sentences in the Gospels:

“But we were hoping that He was the One about to redeem Israel. Besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.” Luke 24:21 (TLV)

We were hoping. Past tense. They are grieving a hope, and they say it to the very face of the hope fulfilled. What Yeshua does next should shape how every one of us opens a Bible:

Then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them the things written about Himself in all the Scriptures. Luke 24:27 (TLV)

Beginning with Moses. Which means the risen Messiah, on the day of His resurrection, chose to spend the afternoon teaching the Scriptures, starting from the Torah and walking forward through the Prophets.

Let me say that again for the people in the back. Yeshua Himself explained ALL the things written about Himself beginning with TORAH and the PROPHETS. I think that clears up the argument that He did away with the Torah. He sees Torah as being about HIM!

And here’s the connection I just can’t get over: when Yeshua faced His own wilderness testing, hungry after forty days, He answered the tempter from this very portion. “Man shall not live on bread alone” (Luke 4:4, quoting Deuteronomy 8:3). He wasn’t quoting a favorite verse. He was quoting His own life. The One explaining the wilderness to these two disciples had already aced the test Himself.

Then evening comes, they urge the stranger to stay, and the scene turns:

“And it happened that when He was reclining at the table with them, He took the matzah, offered a bracha and, breaking it, gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him, and He disappeared from them. They said to one another, “Didn’t our heart burn within us while He was speaking with us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us?”” Luke 24:30–32 (TLV)

Look at the order Luke gives us. First the Word, opened for seven miles. Then the bread, blessed and broken. Their hearts were already burning from the Scriptures before their eyes were opened at the table. Deuteronomy 8:3 in narrative form: every word from the mouth of the LORD, and then the bread through which they finally see Him.

In the TLV’s translation it is matzah on the table, unleavened bread during the week of Unleavened Bread, and a bracha, a blessing, spoken over it. A thoroughly Jewish table, and the risen Yeshua is the One saying grace. Amazing.

Thematic Threads

Bread and the Word. The Torah says man lives by every word from the mouth of God, and demonstrates it with daily manna. Yeshua quotes that verse in His own wilderness, then on the Emmaus road He serves the sequence in person: Scripture first, bread second, recognition at the table. Throughout Scripture, God’s Word and shared meals are often closely linked.

Remembering and forgetting. Moses warns Israel not to forget God when they are full. Zion accuses God of forgetting her when she is empty. The anxiety runs in both directions, and God settles His side of it permanently with engraved palms. The command to remember is given to the only party in the covenant capable of forgetting.

The wilderness, three ways. In Deuteronomy the wilderness is a classroom where hunger teaches dependence. In Isaiah it is a construction site where God intends to plant Eden. In Luke it is a road, and the Teacher walks it with His students until their hearts catch fire. Same landscape, and God is at work in it every time.

On the heel. Eikev promises that blessing follows listening the way a footprint follows a foot. The pattern echoes on the Emmaus road: the disciples listened for seven miles, urged the stranger to stay, set a table, and recognition arrived on the heel of their hospitality. Luke isn’t quoting Deuteronomy’s wordplay; the echo is my own observation, and I’ll take it.

My Final Thoughts

I will be honest with you: I don’t like manna faith. I like Costco faith. I want provision in bulk, shelf-stable, with a receipt I can check. Give me a plan for the next eighteen months and I will trust God enthusiastically for all of it. The wilderness offers no such arrangement. Bread today. Instructions for today. Grace, as it turns out, doesn’t freeze well.

Deuteronomy 8 has been reading my mail all week, because I notice that my gratitude is loudest in lean seasons and quietest when the pantry is full. Moses saw that coming three thousand years ago. Beware, he said, the moment you look at your full table and hear yourself think, my power and the might of my hand made me this. It is such a small, reasonable-sounding thought. It is also how a heart forgets.

And when I do the forgetting in the other direction, when my circumstances tell me God has lost my file, Isaiah hands me the answer God gave Zion. A nursing mother would forget first. My name is in His palms. He didn’t write it somewhere He might misplace. He carved it where His hands open.

So I am practicing the small stuff. The heel-level obediences. The daily thank-you over ordinary bread. If the sages were right that blessing follows the commandments we usually step over, then the most spiritual thing I do this week might not look spiritual at all.

Hebrew Letter Lesson: Gimmel

Gimmel

The Letter. Gimmel is the third letter of the aleph-bet, with a numerical value of three. After aleph, the letter of God’s oneness, and bet, the letter of the house, gimmel steps out the front door and starts moving.

The Name. The letter’s name is most often connected to gamal, the camel, the animal designed to carry provision across long stretches of wilderness. A camel is walking supply. For a portion about God sustaining His people through forty years of desert, the aleph-bet could hardly have sent a better mascot. Although I do have to say that it looks more like me trying to walk with my back pain than it does a camel! 😀

The Shape. The sages of the Talmud (Shabbat 104a) taught the letters in pairs and saw in gimmel and dalet the phrase gomel dalim, one who shows kindness to the poor. In their picture, the gimmel is drawn mid-stride, its foot extended, running toward the dalet, the poor one, to give. That is tradition rather than grammar, but what a tradition! The third letter of the alphabet is sketched as a giver in motion.

In This Portion. Eikev is wall-to-wall giving. God gives manna, water from flinty rock, rain in its season, a land of wheat and barley and honey, even “power to make wealth” (Deuteronomy 8:18). And then He turns His people into gimmels: He “enacts justice for the orphan and widow, and loves the outsider, giving him food and clothing. Therefore love the outsider, for you were outsiders in the land of Egypt” (Deuteronomy 10:18–19). The God who runs toward the needy commands His people to run in the same direction.

A Little Nugget

In the Talmud’s picture, the gimmel never stands still. It is drawn mid-stride, running toward the one in need. In the Hebrew imagination, generosity has feet.

Application

• Name one daily provision out loud this week, before you use it, as coming from God’s hand.

• Choose one heel-level obedience, something small you usually step over, and keep it deliberately all week.

• Be a gimmel: move toward one person in need this week instead of waiting for the need to find you.

Weekly Practice

A manna practice, small on purpose. Each morning this week, before your phone gets a vote in your day, read one verse of Deuteronomy 8:1–7 aloud, one verse per day. Then at one meal each day, pause before the first bite and thank God for one specific provision from the last twenty-four hours. Not provision in general. One thing, named. Manna was gathered daily, and so is gratitude.

Bible Study Questions

1. Read Deuteronomy 7:12–15. What specifically does God promise “as a result” of Israel’s listening? Which of the promises are physical and which are relational?

2. Read Deuteronomy 8:2–5. What reasons does Moses give for the hunger of the wilderness? How does verse 5 reframe the entire forty years?

3. Read Deuteronomy 9:4–6. Three times Moses insists the land is not given because of Israel’s righteousness. Why do you think he repeats it, and what does he immediately retell as evidence?

4. Read Deuteronomy 10:12–19. List what God asks of Israel in these verses. How does the description of God’s own character in verses 17 and 18 shape what He asks?

5. Read Isaiah 49:14–16. How does God answer Zion’s accusation? What does the nursing mother image say that the engraved palms image doesn’t, and the reverse?

6. Read Luke 24:25–32. Trace the sequence between the opening of the Scriptures and the opening of their eyes. What happens at the table, and why do you think recognition came there?

Reflection Questions

7. Where has God allowed you to feel a hunger that later turned out to be teaching you something? Can you name what it taught?

8. Deuteronomy 8 treats fullness, not famine, as the more dangerous spiritual condition. Where in your life is “I earned this myself” quietly replacing gratitude?

9. Zion said “Adonai has forgotten me” while her name was engraved on His palms. What circumstances make you most prone to the same conclusion, and what would remembering the engraving change?

10. The Emmaus disciples urged a stranger to stay for dinner and met the risen Messiah at their own table. What does their hospitality suggest about the posture that precedes recognition?

Action Challenges

11. Keep a manna list this week: one specific provision written down each day, seven by Shabbat. Read the whole list before candle-lighting.

12. Pick the smallest act of obedience you have been stepping over, the heel-level one, and do it this week without telling a soul.

13. Do one concrete act of gimmel giving: bring the meal, offer the ride, buy the groceries, make the visit. Move toward the need before it has to ask.
