Thank you for this in-depth exploration of the biblical links with our saviour's name. I have known his name and its meaning in Hebrew since early on in my journey, but could you please tell me which is the correct emphasis: YESH-uah or YeSHUah? I have heard both.
So in Hebrew, the stress of a word often falls on the last syllable. It is the case here. Both the Name Yeshua and the word yeshuah have the stress on the final syllable. Ye-shu-AH and ye-shu-AH in both cases.
It is because that is how many English speakers pronounce it that way since that is how it is often taught in churches, etc. In fact, because of the remnants of my NY accent, I put the stress on the AH but I say it so fast that it sounds like the stress is in the middle but that is only because of the way my speech moves one letter to the next when saying it quickly.
